This is my Evaluation for my Animation music video

Evaluation - Animation
Tom Saunders

During this project I have developed new skills in both 2D and 3D design with using programs such as Maya and Flash. Although my music Video is not yet complete (to the extent I would like) the idea and the story have been formed. The idea was to visualise someone’s feelings of getting up early in the morning and how they see the environment around them e.g. as things become clearer to the eye. The music I chose (I feel) fit in perfectly as it starts out very calm and relaxed like most people feel when they are in bed in the morning and then becomes faster and lauder just like we become more active as we gradually get out of bed. I decided to do this project in Flash using hand drawn images, which I have scanned in and resized to fit the flash screen. I later discovered that this was not the best way of going about this and proved to be very time consuming in terms of resizing and cutting. Holding all the pictures was also a pain as they look up a lot of my folder space and was difficult to keep them in sequential order.
Instead of just hand drawings I could have used images drawn in Flash to keep them all in one place and may have been less time consuming however I did want the pencil style in the animation to represent that rough feeling that some people have in the morning.
Using Flash helped me to learn more about key frames and how they benefit an animation such as the walk cycle because the legs are already moving because of they way I have drawn them, then the frame with the motion walk cycle needs moving across the screen and stopping at key points to look more realistic (like walking) which is where key frames are used to hold the character back for a short period of time.

Using Maya for the rocket ship animation has taught me many new things in both animation and 3D design. First is 3D modelling I can now make 3D shapes customise them and combine them with other shapes which is how I built the rocket ship. Maya has also shown me how to use motion paths by simply drawing a wavy line convert it to a motion path and attach an object to it, in this case my rocket ship. I can now apply textures to objects and surfaces like the earth, as this was just a polygon sphere with a texture map applied across the surface.

My main animation may have been too ambitious with all the drawing and editing required but this will not stop me from eventually finishing the work with everything I already have.
In order to achieve my animation I had to make my own light board using a glass table and putting a small lamp underneath to make an effective onion skinning to insure the animation fit together in the best possible way.
